Project Management for Metadata Professionals

Mention the words “project management” and many people think of specific technical disciplines such as engineering, IT, or construction. However, project management has become a critical component of library services as well, particularly in the areas of cataloging and metadata management. But how should technical services staff develop project management strategies that are adequately applicable to the detailed nature of metadata tasks and activities? Likewise, how does one implement a plan that will lead to measurable and successful results?

This presentation will examine the usefulness of six broad themes that can be applied to project management in the metadata environment: Setting Goals and Expectations; Defining Project Scope; Determining Staffing Needs; Identifying Specific Tasks; Establishing Team Responsibilities; and Developing Project Timelines. Additionally, this presentation will demonstrate how these six themes can be applied to a complex metadata enhancement project that includes common tasks such as metadata transformation and normalization, batch editing, bulk ingest, and quality control. The format for this presentation will be lecture style.
