Proposal Writing and Conference Etiquette

Library school teaches many things about different topics about the profession like digital libraries, information literacy, academic libraries, etc. But, some of the most valuable things upon graduation that everyone looking for their first library job should know to make transition easier between student and professional are not included in the curriculum, especially when it comes to academic libraries.

Through her personal experiences within her online MLIS program and work as Diversity Scholar at Oregon State University Libraries and Press, Marisol Moreno Ortiz has discovered that there are two topics that need to be addressed to begin a first library job with confidence: proposal writing, including handling rejection, and conference etiquette, including navigation and self-care. This presentation explains the benefits of beginning a first library position already possessing these skills. It also provides guidance on how learn these skills as quickly as possible, with special recommendation to do so for those in tenure track positions. The presentation will be offered as a lecture.

Marisol Moreno Ortiz is currently finishing her appointment as Diversity Scholar in the Diversity Scholars Program (DSP) at Oregon State University Libraries and Press. She holds a Master of Arts in English degree from Portland State University and received her Bachelor of Arts in English with a Writing Minor from Oregon State University. Marisol is currently in her last semester in the online Master of Library and Information Science program at Louisiana State University with a graduation date of Spring 2019. She has been a panelist in the session, “The diverse workforce,” at the Internet Librarian International (ILL) Conference 2018 in London, England. She is committed to equity, inclusion, and diversity in the library profession. Marisol is also a creative writer and poet.
