Identifying Research Data with Matt Harp and Mimmo Bonanni

Matt Harp and Mimmo Bonanni will introduce the concept of research data as an information resource librarians can integrate into their programs. They will first discuss what research data are and how to find them via institutional and disciplinary data repositories which are not always indexed in library catalogs. Mr. Harp will explain how the OpenDOAR index of open access repositories and the Re3dat.org index of research data repositories can be used to support users’ research. Mr. Bonanni will then do a brief showcase of the ICPSR repository which holds social science-related data and discuss what is openly available vs what is available to subscribing institutions. We will also note how research data can be cited and utilized in academic and personal research.

Matthew Harp received his Master's Degree in Information Resources and Library Science in 2013, his Graduate Certificate in Digital Information Management in 2011, and his Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Media Arts in 1998 from the University of Arizona. He is currently a Research Data Management Liaison Librarian at the ASU Library specializing in research support services with a specialization in best practices for research data management. Prior to completing his master's degree, Matthew worked as the Digital Library Projects Manager at the ASU Libraries producing podcasts and video programs and is a 2010 Library Journal Mover and Shaker.

Mimmo Bonanni graduated with his Master's degree in Library and Information Studies from Dalhousie University in 1996, his Bachelor's degree (Italian Literature) from Arizona State University in 1994, and his Bachelor's degree (Anthropology) in 1991 from the University of Alberta. He is a Social Sciences Librarian at ASU Library and is the liaison librarian for Anthropology, Women & Gender Studies, Global Health, Justice and Social Inquiry, Urban Planning, and Italian Literature. As the ICPSR Designated Representative (DR) for ASU, Mimmo assists with locating, downloading, and working with ICPSR data, and he is currently focusing on information literacy of social science data.
