Salt River Tribal Library Staff will welcome the tour group with coffee and pastries, following the library overview presentation the WOLF tour will begin.

The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian community is a sovereign tribe located in the metropolitan Phoenix area. Bounded by the cities of Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, and Fountain Hills, the community encompasses 52,600 acres, with 19,000 held as a natural preserve. With two distinct backgrounds and cultures, the community is comprised of two Native American tribes: the Pima, “Akimel O’Odham” (River People), and the Maricopa, the “Xalychidom Piipaash” (People who live toward the water). Today over 9,000 individuals are enrolled tribal members and the Community Council governs the Community. The majestic Red Mountain can be seen throughout the Community and is located on the eastern boundary. The sight of the mountain symbolizes the home of the Pima and Maricopa people.

The Salt River Tribal Library celebrates 50 years of serving the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community in 2019. The library collection has 14,650 items and includes a unique collection called the Sebastian Juan Memorial collection. It houses materials of the O’Odham-Piipaash (Pima-Maricopa) mainly, but also houses books of other tribes related to the Pima and Maricopa Indians. The library offers standard library services to residents, such as reading programs, author talks, and different classes. Tucked away in the Way of Life Facility, the library has been located in this facility since in January 2018 on the northwest side of the building’s second floor.
